Data through rotation

Ethernet and 10G slip rings engineered for the complete rotating network link

An Ethernet slip ring carries network communication across continuous rotation without twisting the fixed and rotating cables. Reliable performance depends on the exact protocol, data rate, cable geometry, shielding, impedance, connectors, adjacent power circuits, and operating conditions—not continuity alone. Slip Ring USA welcomes 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) applications for configuration-specific engineering review and validation.

Signal integrity

Why a general-purpose signal circuit is not enough

Ethernet relies on a complete transmission channel. Every rotating and stationary element—from internal conductors to external connectors—can affect link performance. The slip ring should therefore be selected against the network requirement and its acceptance test.

  • Controlled impedance through the complete rotating link
  • Pair geometry and continuity across rotation
  • Shielding, grounding, and separation from power circuits
  • Connector and lead-wire performance on both sides
  • Crosstalk, insertion loss, return loss, and rotational variation
  • Validation with the actual network hardware when required

10 Gigabit Ethernet applications

Bring us the 10GbE requirement early

Slip Ring USA accepts 10GbE slip-ring applications for engineering review. Because 10G performance depends on the complete channel, final feasibility and acceptance criteria are confirmed for the specific cable system, connectors, circuit mix, mechanical package, rotational duty, environment, and test method.

Specification checklist

Define the channel before selecting the hardware

These inputs allow the rotating link to be reviewed as part of the network rather than as an isolated connector.

Protocol and data rate
Specify the exact network standard and required link speed—including whether the application requires 100 Mbps, 1 GbE, or 10GbE—not only “Ethernet.”
Cable and connector
Define cable category, shielding, connector style, lead length, and the fixed-side and rotating-side interfaces.
Network topology
Identify the connected devices, link length, switches, power sourcing, and any protocol-specific timing requirements.
Power and other circuits
List every adjacent circuit by function, voltage, rated current, and peak or inrush current.
Mechanical duty
Provide RPM, duty cycle, direction changes, mounting, envelope, orientation, and life target.
Acceptance criteria
Define link-speed, error-rate, packet-loss, noise, or application-level tests required for approval.

Mechanical architecture

Package the network path around the machine

Compact or capsule

Useful where diameter, weight, and axial length are tightly constrained and no center opening is required.

Through-bore

Fits around a shaft or center service and can combine Ethernet with power, control, encoder, and other circuits.

Integrated or hybrid

Combines the electrical network path with fiber, RF, pneumatic, hydraulic, or additional rotary interfaces.

Application review

Bring the network details, not just the circuit count

Share the devices, protocol, link speed, cable and connector system, power circuits, mechanical envelope, rotational duty, environment, and required acceptance test. We will identify the missing inputs before a configuration is released.

Engineering questions

Ethernet slip ring FAQ

Can a slip ring transmit Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Slip Ring USA accepts both Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) applications for engineering review. Final feasibility and performance depend on the required standard, complete cable system, shielding, impedance, connectors, circuit mix, mechanical package, rotational duty, environment, and acceptance test. A generic signal circuit should not be assumed to support either data rate.
Can an Ethernet slip ring also carry electrical power?
Yes. Power and Ethernet circuits can share one assembly when their routing, isolation, shielding, grounding, thermal load, and connectors are engineered together. Provide both rated and peak current for every power circuit.
Can EtherCAT, PROFINET, or EtherNet/IP pass through a slip ring?
Industrial Ethernet protocols may be supported, but the exact protocol, physical layer, data rate, topology, cycle-time expectations, and acceptance test must be defined. Qualification should reflect the real controller, cabling, and network devices when timing or reliability is critical.
Is an RJ45 connector required?
No. RJ45, M12, circular, flying-lead, and customer-specified terminations may be considered. Connector selection depends on space, environment, shielding, serviceability, and the approved cable system.
When should I use fiber instead of electrical Ethernet?
A fiber-optic rotary joint can be preferable when bandwidth, electromagnetic immunity, electrical isolation, distance, or low signal loss dominates the design. The complete optical link and its power budget still need to be specified.
